You know, being a Professional Bartender encompasses a lot. You have to have all the right stuff: Mixology skills, knowledge, attitude, personality, professionalism and efficiency, right? Of course, I'm right. But you know what else can be really useful? Knowledge of trends and the popular drinks of the day.

This requires not only reading the trade mags, but actually getting out there and "mixing it up" so to speak. Some would call it going to a bar, I like to call it "Field Research."

Not only will you be on the scene to see what people are drinking, but it gives you the opportunity to try something new yourself. Talk to your bartender. Ask he or she what's popular right now, and ask he or she what they like to make and what they like to drink.

Remember, knowledge is power and the more you know, the better prepared you will be to provide your guests with the best of what's available.

For instance, I can give you a short list of some popular drinks and alcohols. Sex on the Beach and Sex with an Alligator are as popular as ever. Sweet Tea-infused Vodka is creeping into the mainstream. Mount Gay Barbados Rum is showing up on more and more back bars, And, oh yeah,pomegranate-flavored anything is all the rage over the last couple of years.

Simply put, you gotta stay on top of your game! So get out there and get the info and use it to your advantage. Your guests are counting on you!
